In case you were unaware of the "Mortgage Debt Forgiveness Relief Act of 2007" you can follow this link to the FAQ section on the IRS website: http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=179414,00.html or contact your local tax professional to gain more insight.

This Act is very important as it provides possible relief from the tax implications for those borrowers who successfully short sale their primary home. It was inacted in 2007 and is set to expire on Dec 31, 2012! I have been unable to find any evidence that this will be extended so time is running out.
